Think and Grow Rich - The Original Version Restored and Revised


Tgrcover_2 I recently received an email from Ross Cornwell who is the editor of  “Think and Grow Rich!” (subtitled) “The Original Version, Restored and Revised”. 

This book is truly THE classic self-help, inspirational, and success book of all time.  If you are going to read only one book on this subject - make it Think And Grow Rich.  Napoleon Hill's classic started it all and has influenced just about every author and book written on the subject since then. 

Think and Grow Rich was one of the first books I read that greatly impacted me personally and professionally.  It started me on my continuing journey of personal development.  I have read it numerous times.  One of my favorite quotes of all time is from this book:  "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."   

Ross Cornwell has done a fantastic job of updating and editing the text and restoring some original content.  In his own words - here is a synopsis of the revised edition:

This new 412-page trade paperback edition (versus 250+ pages for other editions) has an appendix, extensive endnotes (more than 50 pages), and an index -- features no other version of the book has ever had. The book has been restored to its complete original (1937) content, then "gently" edited and revised to eliminate errors, outdated terminology, and to change a few statements that today would be considered racially and otherwise offensive to most readers.

Free Inspirational Movies; Motivational Products -

I was meeting with my good friend and fellow coach, Joel Smith of Mindset Dynamics, last week and he introduced me to a great website with motivational and inspirational videos and products.  I viewed the movie 212 degrees and loved the message... One extra degree (...of effort, activity, belief, focus, perservance...) makes all the difference in the world.

6 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Creating a Blog

Here  are some considerations and questions to ponder before you launch in to the world of blogging.

1.  Are you committed to posting on a regular basis?  Weekly at a minimum - to several times per week?  There are many, many abandoned blogs in the blogosphere.  It's pointless to start a blog if you are not willing to commit the time and effort to keep it current.

2.  Do you have something to say? to contribute? Do you enjoy writing?

3.  Can you provide compelling, valuable content for readers?

4.  Do you read other blogs?  Are you familiar with who is saying what about your industry, market, niche, interest?  Have you checked on the competition in your area?  Who is blogging and what are they saying?  How can you differentiate yourself from other blogs?

5.  Do you have an existing website with articles, content and information you can link to from your blog?

6.  Are you involved in the blogosphere?  Do you participate?  Comment on other blogs?  Are you a part of any online group or forum discussion?  Have you checked out Active Rain?  (See My post on Reasons to Join the Active Rain Real Estate Network for more information).  This is not a critical component to becoming an effective blogger.  I have simply found that participating in the community of bloggers helps me stay on top of trends and what works!

Why Blog? - How to Blog Series

There are many good reasons to create and maintain a blog... these are my top 6:

1.  Relatively easy and cost-effective web solution

  • Don’t need to be a “techie” to create a blog
  • Real time, fresh, relevant content
  • Easy to maintain and post
  • There are many free blog platforms
  • Your time and commitment is the main resource needed

2.  Create higher Search Engine Rankings

  • Blog posts are coming up more and more frequently in search engines
  • Again…fresh, relevant, keyword specific content is the key!
  • Your blog can be an extension of your website – have a link to your primary real estate website on your blog
  • Don’t (over) sell your listings or yourself on your blog – use your website for the promotion and selling

3.  Build a community

  • Your blog is an opportunity to communicate with both current and potential future clients and customers
  • Create a buzz  with compelling content that keeps readers coming back for more - maintain loyal customers by providing the information they want

4.  Position yourself as a niche market/industry/local market expert

  • Write about your area of expertise in the business
  • Use your blog to provide specific content and info to groups like:
     Your SOI/Past Clients
     Geographical Farming Areas
     Other Niche Markets  (FSBO/Expireds/High Rise/Condos/Land, etc)

5.   Marketing and branding

  • Your blog can further promote your local brand and add to your overall marketing presence
  • Just remember – the blog forum is more about community, networking, communication, sharing information – not just selling.

6.   Generate Leads

  • Ultimately when you provide valuable, informative and compelling content on your blog and
  • develop a relationship-based approach to sales and
  • demonstrate to the reader/visitor your human side, your unique voice, your transparent-self…  I, for one, believe it can turn into business!

How & Where to Find Blogs - How To Blog Series

There are a variety of Blog Search Engines to assist you in search of blogs on your favorite subjects.

Two of my favorite sites are: Technorati and Google Blog Search

Search tip for Technorati:  Type in the keyword(s) of what you are looking for in the search bar.  Let's say you were looking for blogs about "Real Estate Coach".  After you type in "real estate coach" in the search bar - you will be directed to recent posts that are "supposedly" relevant. 

Technorati defaults to "posts" with relevant keywords for your search.  I recommend clicking on the "blogs" tab to find specific blogs about the subject you are interested in.  In my example, this is what you would find (as of 6.21.07) for the search "real estate coach" after clicking on the blogs tab on Technorati:

Google Blog Search is similar in that your keyword search will return specific blog posts  (with the most recently posted content first) on the subject - not necessarily a blog dedicated to that subject.

If you haven't already noticed, blog posts and blogs show up in the natural results of searches in traditional search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc.  Let's go back to my example.  A search for "real estate coach" in Google resulted in my blog site ( ranking 7th (again as of 6.21.07).

So, are you getting the big picture yet?  Is the power of this blogging thing sinking in?  Did I mention that I did not have to pay to show up on the first page of Google for my keyword search.  Now, before you get too excited, we have to talk about keywords, the popularity and competition for certain keywords (like "las vegas real estate") and things like the power of long tail searches.  But, that's for another day and more advanced topics.  Suffice it to say that having a frequently updated, keyword relevant blog on your topic of choice has major business benefits!

Here's my challenge to you... get out there and search the blogosphere for your favorite topics, hobbies, competitors...whatever.  See who, what, how, where, when and why people are blogging.  Start to get comfortable  and familiar with it.  Take note of what style or voice appeals to you.  Make some comments on blogs.  Participate...don't be a lurker!

One final tip.  I have discovered some of my favorite blogs by checking out the blogrolls of blogs I subscribe to!   Blogrolls are a list of links to other blogs or websites that the author of the blog you are visiting recommends.

Keys to an Achievable Outcome

I have found the following questions to be useful to both me and those I coach when contemplating and writing goals or outcomes.  This series of questions are the keys to achievable outcomes.  When you take the time to consider each question after stating your desired outcome you will enhance the overall power and clarity of your written goals or outcomes.

1. What specifically do you want? 

  • Stated in the positive, present-tense, as if you already have it.
  • Clearly defined, vibrant, written goals in all areas of you life.   (Spiritual, Personal, Family, Business, Financial, Fun-Hobbies-Travel)

2. Where are you now in relation to the desired outcome?

3. What will you see, hear, feel, etc when you have it?

4.  How will you know when you have it?

5. What will this outcome get for you or allow you to do?

6. Is it only for you?  Or is it for others also?

7. Where, when, how and with whom do you want it?

8. What do you have now, and what do you need to get your outcome? 
     Have you ever had or done this before? 
     Do you know anyone who has? 
     Can you act as if you have it?

9. For what purpose do you want it?  What will you gain or lose if you have it?

Who is Blogging? - How To Blog Series

The short answer...anyone and everyone!  From the average citizen blogging about their daily life to celebrities to politicians to businesses (Fortune 500 companies to small business owners).  Whether you want to blog about your hobbies, passions, city, neighborhood, rants or raves, or the Las Vegas Real Estate Market - the blog is the platform to find and share your unique voice, reach your target audience and interact with others.

An early, popular blog is which chronicles the life and times of Heather Armstrong (formerly Hamilton).  Heather made national headlines when she got fired from her job for blogging about her workplace.  As Heather puts it on her about page:

" My advice to you is BE YE NOT SO STUPID. Never write about work on the internet unless your boss knows and sanctions the fact that YOU ARE WRITING ABOUT WORK ON THE INTERNET."

The Power of Affirmations

I was talking to a friend yesterday about the power of affirmations.  She shared one of hers with me:  “Make decisions based on where you are going instead of where you are.”

It reminded me of my NLP Coach training.  One of the many things my trainers, Tad & Adriana James, discussed was how so many people focus on what they don’t want rather that what they really want.  They also introduced this powerful equation: C > E and this key question – “What side of the equation are you on…CAUSE or EFFECT

  • Do you take 100% responsibility for your actions, your life, where you are now? 
  • Or, do you blame your current condition, state of being, attitude, life on someone or something outside of yourself?
  • Is it your environment, the market, your boss, the economy, the kids, the war that’s responsible for where you are now - mentally, physically, emotionally or spiritually? 
  • Are you the Victim or the Victor?

111believelg_2  And, if you are not happy about where you are right now – what action are you taking to move toward your desired outcome?  Volumes and volumes have been written on this subject – from the classic “Think and Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill to the recent viral marketing phenomenon – “The Secret.”  I loved the message of The Secret and how it really appealed to the masses with this one caveat….you must take action

It’s not enough to just think about what you desire.  Positive thoughts with real feelings behind them (or in the words of Napoleon Hill “a burning desire”)  is the first step.  The next powerful step to manifesting your reality – your outcomes or goals – is to take the right and appropriate action toward  not away from it.  If your thoughts are dwelling on the fact that you don't have it yet, things never work out for you, or other negative self-talk - you are moving away from what you want.  Simply recognize the negative thoughts and change them!  Practice makes perfect.

…the bottom line for me is that affirmations and visualization just plain work!  My visual goal board and affirmations help me stay focused and moving toward my outcomes and where I am going!

Types of Blogs and Blog Posts - How To Blog Series

The majority of blogs are text-based.  You can make your blog more creative and interesting with the effective use of photos, graphics, audio and/or video content.  Some cool tools to consider using for adding multi-media content to your blog:

  • Flickr - for photo storing and sharing.   Flickr has a built-in blog feature that allows me to upload a photo to my Typepad blog.
  • You Tube - Upload and share your videos.  Easily upload and embed video to your blog (currently works with Blogger, BlogSpot, WordPress, LiveJournal, and Piczo, Friendster)
  • Audio Acrobat - I use this service to upload and store audio files, create audio files and podcasts.
